Ironing: When to Use Each Use Steaming For: Chiffon and organza bridesmaid dresses Tulle and mesh fabrics Delicate embellishments or beading Velvet (steam from the back only) Quick touch-ups before the wedding Large, flowing skirts Use Ironing For: Satin (with pressing cloth) Cotton or linen blends Structured bodices and seams Hems that need crisp lines Small, targeted areas Heavy fabrics that need pressure Never iron directly on: Chiffon Tulle Sequins or beading Lace overlays Any shiny fabric without protection How to Steam Your Bridesmaid Dress Properly Equipment You’ll Need: Handheld or standing garment steamer Distilled water (prevents mineral deposits) Padded hanger Clean towel or pressing cloth Well-lit space with room to move Steaming Steps: Fill steamer with distilled water and let it heat for 3–5 minutes Hang dress at eye level on a sturdy hook or door frame Test steam on an inside seam to check temperature safety Hold steamer 6–8 inches away from fabric surface Work in downward strokes following the fabric grain Steam in sections: bodice, skirt front, skirt back, sleeves Let cool 30 minutes before moving or wearing Pro tip: Steam while wearing rubber gloves or holding a towel behind the fabric to catch steam and prevent burns
